Margaret Bourke-White The Photography of Design 1927-1936

One thing I love to do is read books about some of the great photographers of our time. Besides giving a glimpse of what life was like for them and their surroundings, it helps me develop and hone my style of photography. Case in point is Margaret Bourke-White. I guess you could call her one of my heroes because I absolutely love her style. What is even more impressive is how way back in the 20’s and 30’s she marketed herself when most women didn’t do that. She was born in 1904 and grew up around photography. Her father was…

Developing B&W Film in the Kitchen

Developing film is actually not a hard process at all. It just takes a little practice and patience to do it and get great results. Of course you need a film camera but those are really inexpensive now and you can get some really good equipment for just a few hundred dollars. Or perhaps you have an old Canon AE-1 or Nikon FE in your closet. Get some film and go for it. I like to use Ilford film. I have for years and the quality is consistent. Maybe because all they make is black and white film. I also…

Shooting with the Fuji X-Pro 1

A couple months ago, I traded most of my Canon DSLR bodies and lenses for the Fuji X-Pro 1 and also the X100S. You might be thinking, boy that was dumb but it was the best move I’ve made in a long time. I shot with the Canon 5D MkII and 7D for several years and I had a nice selection of L series lenses. I was just getting tired of hauling all that equipment around when I went out to shoot. I read review after review of both of the Fuji cameras and knew that I had to have…

Country Club Plaza

The Country Club Plaza (often referred to as The Plaza) is an American upscale shopping district and residential neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri. It was the first shopping center in the world designed to accommodate shoppers arriving by automobile.[1] The 55-acre (223,000 m²) site is about four miles (6.44 km) south of downtown, between 45th and 51st streets to the north and south and between Broadway and Madison Street to the east and west. The Kansas state line is one mile (1.6 km) to the west. Established in 1922 by J. C. Nichols and designed architecturally after Seville, Spain, the Plaza comprises high-end retail establishments, restaurants, and entertainment venues, as well as offices.[2] The neighborhoods surrounding the Plaza…

Using the Leica M6 for the First Time

I shot my first roll of film with the Leica M6 and a 35mm F2 Summicron ASPH. lens. Wow! I grew up shooting film so when I decided to get the Leica I knew I had made the right decision. I haven’t shot film for at least 12 or 13 years. I chose to get the M6 because of the meter in the camera (actually it’s the M6 TTL). The lens was a no brainer. the 35mm f2 is so sharp and fast and just plain built well. Sure it was quite a splurge to get the camera and…
