Tabletop Studio Setup

In my last post, I talked about my Ikea hack for a small tabletop studio. I thought I’d write about it today because I really like this setup. I bought an Ikea kitchen cart called the Bekv√§m for $59.00. A great little cart with a really nice butcher block type top, 2 shelves and wheels on 2 of the legs. Oh, and solid wood! Once I got it put together, which was pretty easy, I was impressed at how solid it is. I knew that I wanted to add some way of attaching a backdrop so I drilled a couple holes…

Fuji X-T1 in the Studio

I have owned this wonderful camera since March and finally decided to see how it can shoot in a studio setting. Using both available light and also the strobes. I shoot primarily food photography, and try to earn a living doing it but that’s another story. When I was shooting with the Canon 5d MkII, I used the Canon 100mm macro lens for the bulk of my food shots. On the Fuji, I have the Fuji 60mm macro lens. Did the Fuji live up to my expectations? Why the Fuji X-T1 is Now My Favorite Camera!

First off, this isn’t a review of the X-T1. There are plenty of those out there. This is just my view on shooting with this wonderful little gem. I’ve shot with Canon for the past 25 years and also Nikon but in the past few months, I sold all the Canon gear including the 5D MkII and several L series lenses and also I sold the Nikon D800 along with the Nikon 105 macro and Tamron 24-70. Do I miss that gear, absolutely not! I don’t miss hauling everything around in a giant Lowepro backpack and having neck cramps from…

Cold Outside? Shoot Inside!

This winter has been especially nasty here in Kansas City. Right now it’s 7 degrees with some snow and sleet on the ground. Tonight, below zero temps. I am so sick of it to say the least. I love going outside and shooting but I must confess that I am a wimp when it comes to cold temperatures. In order to satisfy my desire to shoot something, I took a couple trips to a few antique malls. Score! I had the best time and antique stores are like a treasure trove of weird and vintage items just waiting to be…
