I have this thing about camera bags. I’m obsessed with finding the perfect bag! I own a bunch of ’em. Tenba, Think Tank, Lowe Pro, Tamrac and the list goes on. BUT, I believe my search is over with this little gem – the ONA Bowery bag in antique cognac leather. You see, I like my bags to look, well, not like a camera bag. I really hate drawing attention to myself and when people see you wandering around with a camera bag that has a giant label on it, it just screams “I have expensive camera equipment. Please follow me around so you can get your hands on my stuff.” That might be a little extreme but you know.
What I love about the ONA bag is it has character. The leather that they use is wonderful and smells amazing. Now people might look at me weird when I have to get a whiff of my bag 🙂 As you carry the bag around, it gets more character, like a really good pair of jeans that get more comfortable and better looking with time. I’ve only had mine for about a week and you can already see some marks on it – love that! ONA calls this bag an insert, it’s small and can fit inside their bigger bags. But it’s the perfect size for a small camera like my Leica MP or any mirror less camera and an extra lens or two. In my case, I have an extra lens and a couple rolls of film inside. Perfect fit! There are 5 pockets, 2 in front, 2 on the sides and 1 in the back, which can sort of hold an iPad Mini. I use the front pockets for my Field Notes notebook. (Which fits down in the pocket nicely. I pulled it out for the photo). Along with my favorite Retro 51 Tornado pen. The marks you see in the photo below under the camera are from the notebook rubbing on the leather – remember, character!
This bag is made really well too. All the seams are stitched perfectly and the buckle and strap hardware are made to last. The buckle is adjustable and is pretty easy to get open with one hand. The interior is well padded too. No worries about anything getting dinged up while inside. One thing that I really like about ONA itself is that fact that it’s founder is a woman – Tracy Foster. Here is a great little article about her and ONA and her office. You can just tell that she takes pride in what she does.
The Bowery comes in 2 types of leather, mine which is the antique cognac and also the dark truffle leather. The cost is $239.00. There are also different colors of Waxwear cloth for $129.00 if you’re not into the leather thing. Sure you can get cheaper camera bags but you won’t get the quality or the amazing look of the bag. Besides, when you are carrying around a several thousand dollars of equipment, don’t you think it’s better to keep it in something like an ONA bag? I do. Oh, another important feature is that my Bowery bag matches my scooter – very important!
If you’re looking for a well-made, small bag for your gear, check out ONA.You’ll be glad you did!
